How Do I Refill Window Washer Fluid?

No one likes staring at that bug that just smashed against the windshield while driving through . That’s why window wiper fluid is so great. The service pros at Dale Earnhardt Jr. Chevrolet love to educate our customers on car care, so let’s talk about how to refill window washer fluid, the different window washer fluid types, and what’s the best window wiper fluid for your needs.

How to Properly Refill Window Wiper Fluid

Refilling window washer fluid is easy! Just follow these steps:

How to Refill Windshield Wiper Fluid

  1. Buy a gallon of window wiper fluid at any general retail store, auto parts store, or gas station.
  2. If the fluid is concentrated, mix it with water according to the instructions on the jug.
  3. Raise the hood of your car.
  4. Locate the window washer fluid reservoir under your hood. It is usually semi-clear plastic with a large cap. The cap usually has a windshield symbol on it.
  5. Locate the fill line on the side of the reservoir.
  6. Use a funnel to fill the container up to the fill line.
  7. Replace the cap on the window wiper fluid container and close the hood.
  8. Start your car and turn on your windshield wipers. Test the fluid by turning on the spray.

Window Washer Fluid Types

Did you know there are several different window washer fluid types? Here’s a quick list to show you some of your options:

Window Washer Fluid Types

  • De-icer or fluid with antifreeze
  • Bug wash for removing insects and other grime
  • Water repellant
  • Streak-free

What’s the Best Window Wiper Fluid for You?

How do you know what the best window wiper fluid is for you? It boils down to the climate and conditions you drive in. We don’t have to deal with freezing temperatures much here in the area. But if you do a lot of driving up North in the Winter, you’ll want to use the fluid with antifreeze in it. If you drive a lot on the highway at night in the Summer, think about using the “bug wash” variety. Do you often drive in the rain? Try the water repellant type of wiper fluid; the rain will bead right off your windshield, increasing your visibility and keeping you safe!
