Do EVs Need Oil?

If you’ve just purchased an electric vehicle (EV) or are thinking about purchasing one, then you might be wondering if maintenance for an electric car is different than a gas-powered car. One of the questions we hear many Crawfordville drivers ask is, “Do electric cars need oil?” Because they don’t have combustion engines, electric cars don’t need oil, so you’ll never have to have your electric car’s oil changed.

That being said, electric cars do still need maintenance as they have other fluids and moving parts. Take a look at what you can expect when maintaining your electric car with the service center at Dale Earnhardt Jr. Chevrolet!

Important Parts in Your EV

Electric cars don’t need oil since they don’t have an engine. But, there are still plenty of moving parts inside of an EV that need to be serviced and maintained, especially if you want your EV running at its best during your Quincy commute.

Here are some of the most important components of your EV:

  • Electric Motor: This motor converts the electric current that comes from your battery into motion that propels your EV forward. The motor churns from the energy created through a magnetic field by its surrounding magnets.
  • Charge Ports: These are the charger locations where you’ll charge or “top off” your EV’s battery.
  • Traction Motors: These are the motors that turn your EV’s wheels.
  • Onboard charger: This works in conjunction with the charge ports to convert the charge received by the charge ports into power.
  • DC-DC Converter: This converts the high-voltage direct current (DC) power from the battery into low-voltage DC power so that your EV can move.
  • Battery: This is where the electricity is stored that powers your EV’s motor.
  • Thermal System: The thermal system prevents your EV’s motors and electric components from overheating.

To keep up with your EV’s regular service schedule and make vehicle maintenance more affordable, be sure to take advantage of our service offers at Dale Earnhardt Jr. Chevrolet!

Important Fluids to Service on Your EV

Do electric cars need oil? As we’ve confirmed earlier, with no gasoline engine to keep lubricated and cooled, no engine oil is needed. However, we also briefly mentioned that other fluids are still needed to keep your EV driving efficiently.

Here are some fluids that your EV will still need to have regularly serviced:

  • Brake Fluid: Your EV’s brake system will need to be lubricated in order to operate without grinding or creating too much friction. That’s where brake fluid comes in.
  • Transmission Fluid: This fluid keeps your EV’s transmission gears and other parts preserved.
  • Coolant: Normally, coolant works to keep the engine from overheating. With EVs, coolant keeps the battery and other systems from overheating.

There are still plenty of other things that need to be serviced with an EV, including tires! For all of your EV maintenance needs near Havana, schedule service with Dale Earnhardt Jr. Chevrolet.
