There are three popular stories theorizing how the Chevrolet logo came into existence, leaving a bit of mystery surrounding the symbol. See which story seems most likely to you:

  • Wallpaper in Paris– The most widely-agreed upon Chevy logo origin story says that William C.Durant, the company co-founder, first got his inspiration from the wallpaper in a Parisian hotel. He was so enraptured by it, he cut a piece of the pattern and took it home to replicate it.
  • Dinnertime Drawings– William C.Durant’s daughter, Margery, published her own version of the story in her memoir entitled “My Father and I.” She claims her father always sketched while at the dinner table; one night, he doodled between courses and happened upon the perfect icon. Perhaps it was inspired by wallpaper, but Margery claims it happened right in their American kitchen.
  • Compressed Coal- Catherine Durant, Willam’s widow, claims he was inspired by an ad in the local newspaper for a coal company called the Southern Compressed Coal Company. When the historian Ken Kaufman heard this theory, he investigated it. He found the coal company’s logo in a very old newspaper clipping. Sure enough, it looked quite similar to William’s sketches.
